Arno Akkermans
Arno Akkermans is a professor of private law at VU University
Amsterdam. In 1991 he graduated from the faculty of law of Tilburg
University (cum laude) and obtained his doctorate in 1997 at the
same university (cum laude). From 1996 until his appointment as
professor at the VU University in 1999, Arno worked as an attorney
in the Insurance and Liability Group of Kennedy Van der Laan.
Arno mainly publishes in the field of liability and the law
of damages. He has written much about subjects such as
causality, the burden of proof, medical expert's opinions
and the role of emotions in the settlement of personal injury
claims. A large part of his publications is freely
available at the Digital Academic Repository of Vrije
Universiteit
(VU-DARE). Arno is working with
multidisciplinary research teams, together with colleagues of
the faculty of psychology of VU University and of the VU
University Medical Centre. He is founder and president of the
Medical Experts Interdisciplinary Working Group
(Interdisciplinaire Werkgroep Medische Deskundigen
(IWMD)) and co-founder of the Amsterdam Interdisciplinary Centre
for Law and Health (Interfacultair samenwerkingsverband
Gezondheid en Recht (IGER)). In 2010 the Insurers'
Institute on Personal Injury Claims (Personenschade
Instituut van Verzekeraars (PIV)) awarded a prize to Arno,
the so-called PIV Giraffe, for his scientific work in the field
of personal injury.
Arno Akkermans is counsel to the Insurance and Liability Group
of Kennedy Van der Laan.
